Same old "Server busy" error - Xcelsius Engage, Presenation Design 2011

I need help!

I have spent 3 days updating a complex dashboard using Engage 2008 (Windows 7, Office 2010) and now I cannot open the XLF file at all - it keeps showing the Server Busy box - This action cannot be completed because the "Microsoft Excel" program is not responding. ....etc.  Unless I can open the XLF file, the work of several days is lost and if I redo it, how can I be sure the same problem will not happen again (although I will save back-up files progressively next time)!  Can anyone help me - it is totally infuriating!  If you think you can help - please read on:

More background on the emergence of the error:

I should have known better - ever since I first used Crystal Xclesius 4.5 back in 2008 it has always caused major problems.  In this instance I had created the XLF file originally in 2008 under Windows XP and Office 2007.  When I started upgrading earlier this week (under Windows 7 and Office 2010) initially I got the Server Busy error but after hitting the "Retry" button a few times it would load OK.  Then just as I had finished the model I got an error when generating a SWF visualisation.  I saved the XLF file (probably a mistake) and from then on I have not been able to get past the Server Busy warning - it always forces me to close.  I can open a simple XLF file no problem.  I can open the XLF file I originally started from, albeit with several presses of the Retry button in the Server Busy box.

What I have done to try to solve the problem:

I followed all the many tips on how to address the problem.  I modified the Xcelsius.msi file.  No change.  I removed Xcelsius Engage, reinstalled it including SP4 - same problem.  I installed a trial version of SAP Crystal Design Presentation 2011 - same problem.  I then did all the above on a different PC - same problem.

Final word to SAP/Business Objects

Why hasn't SAP fixed this long-running problem?  Is there a limit on the level of complexity in the underlying Excel spreadsheet thgat the XLF software can handle?  If so then admit it.  If not, then fix it!  Is SAP able to look at the file and open it?
